Planning what to wear to a wedding can be difficult… even if you aren’t a part of the bridal party. Ensuring that you are wearing the perfect outfit with the right amount of appropriateness can be tricky, especially when everyone’s wedding dress code can vary. To help, I have created a list of general do’s and don’ts to help you pick out the perfect outfit for your next wedding appearance!
Do Consider the Location
Does the wedding take place inside, outside, or some combination of both? Understanding the wedding venue can give you a good start on how to plan your outfit. If the wedding is outside, and you’re super prone to attracting mosquitos, you might want to make sure to cover up as much as possible. If the wedding is inside and you get chilly easily, you might want to make sure to bring a sweater! Dressing in layers is also a good option! It’s likely that your car won’t be too far away from the ceremony and reception space, so throw your sweater in your car if you decide you don’t need it!
Don’t Wear White
White is reserved for the bride. There are many other colors to choose from. Just don’t do it!
Do Check the Weather
It is so important to consider the weather forecast when picking out your outfit… and styling your hair for that matter! Especially here in Georgia where the weather can go from sunny and 75 degrees one day to overcast and 50 degrees the next. Getting a hint on what the day’s temperature is going to be will allow you to pick between the sweet sundress you want to wear or the new dress pants you’ve been dying to style. If the day ahead is going to be super windy, maybe consider avoiding short, flowy dresses that you will have to hold down all night. Also, if it is going to be rainy or humid, consider wearing your hair in a nice updo to avoid potential frizziness. This way you look great in all the photos even in the worst weather conditions!
Don’t Wear Jeans
Many weddings will provide a dress code on the invitation, but if not, it is generally understood that you should not wear jeans. Sticking to a business casual type dress code is a safe bet when attending a wedding that doesn’t provide a specific dress code up front. Jeans are an every day wear item and weddings are a special event that only happens once in a person’s life. You want your attire to reflect the importance of their day and avoiding jeans is more than a step in the right direction.
Do Be Mindful of Your Footwear
We all have that pair of shoes that is so cute in theory, but so painful to wear in reality. Weddings are meant to be a celebration of love and it is really hard to celebrate love when you are hating your throbbing feet. Choosing comfortable, stylish shoes that won’t become a distraction as the day goes on is essential when it comes to ensuring your dance moves won’t be affected by the time the reception rolls around.
Don’t Overthink It
Try not to get too caught up in your outfit choice. As long as you are within the dress code and comfortable, all is well. You are there to celebrate the happy couple and have a good time. Besides, at the end of the day, all eyes are on the bride and groom!
